Toyota Scores Top-Five Finish In USAC Western Sprint ActionThree Toyota-powered entries were on hand for the event, which featured qualifying time-trials, heat races, and a 50-lap feature event.
Three-time series champion Tony Hunt of Lincoln, Calif., led all qualifiers with a 13.752-second clocking on the third-mile paved oval. Hunt was aboard an entry fielded by Alan Kaiser Motorsports. Also carrying the Toyota flag was a two-car entry fielded by Western Speed, driven by Fresno, Calif. driver Tim Skoglund and Ridgefield, Wash. driver Paul Zimmerly.
Both teams utilize 355-ci naturally-aspirated Toyota V8 engines prepared by TRD.
Hunt scored a breakthrough series win for Toyota on Sept. 20, and the Toyota brigade hoped to build on their growing late-season momentum. Hunt got things started by leading qualifying, while Zimmerly was eight and Skoglund 10th.
In heat race competition Hunt was third in the first race, while the second race saw Zimmerly finish third and Skoglund fifth.
In the feature race Hunt raced home to a fifth-place finish, with Skoglund seventh and Zimmerly 13th.
"We were happy with fast time, and we had a good race car," said Hunt. "We started eighth in the feature race, and we had a solid car, but not a dominant car. We were a little tight with the fuel load on, but all in all it was a solid night for us and we were content with the results."
The USAC Western Sprint Car series will close the 2008 season at the historic and prestigious Turkey Night Grand Prix at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway on Thanksgiving night, Nov. 27.
"I'm really looking forward to Irwindale," said Hunt. "We'll do some testing to get ready, because this is an important race for us in a lot of respects. The Turkey Night is very special, and we really want to have a good run to cap off our season at our marquee event."
